FAQs - General

Our courses are specifically designed for adults. The majority of members are aged between 25 and 50, our oldest is 70+. Yes, grandma can wheelie!

Our courses provide every step you need to go from complete beginner to skilled practitioner in your desired skill. There are no prerequisites as such, although less experienced riders are wise to start courses that develop core skills first, such as the Flat Pedal Challenge, Baseline Balance Skills and Cornering Continuum.

Simply log-on to the website or smartphone app and follow the progressions. Some lessons are informational, though most have video demonstrations and drills to complete. Move on when you are ready.

Online coaching is a highly effective learning method. Riders progress at their own pace and practice when it suits. Incremental steps ensure long term results. This is not entertainment, it's skills training designed to bring you success.

Our Coaches and Ambassadors are standing by. Ask a question, or post your practice video and receive advice from an experienced rider or coach, sometimes both.

We're glad you asked! Our courses provide every progression you need to master each skill. Compare a free 3-minute online bunnyhop tutorial with our 38-lesson (ad-free) course and the difference becomes clear. Plus you'll have full access to our coach and support team when questions arise.

Many factors determine how long it takes to learn a new skill.

Make no mistake, bunnyhops, wheelies, jumping etc, are advanced skills that cannot be learned in just a couple of practice sessions. The timeframe is usually measured in months.

Learning new skills as an adult takes time. We often have busy lives with limited time, and even if we are fit, experienced riders, our bodies need to adapt to the new skills. We must develop strength, coordination, balance and timing as we progress.

This is why so few riders can perform the skills we teach. If it were easy, everyone would be able to do it. If free online skills tutorials actually worked, everyone would be shredding like pros.

Don't be discouraged. The process of learning new skills is hugely satisfying (yes, sometimes frustrating) but so much fun. It's like being a kid again. Adult responsibilities be gone!

FAQs - Members

RLC courses are designed to stand alone, each containing everything you need to know to learn a specific skill.

Our courses can be consumed in any order that takes your fancy. We recommend starting with the course that will motivate you to get on your bike and practice regularly. That's the most important thing!

Through regular practice and play we're building strength, coordination, balance and timing, which all adds up to achieving the holy grail of MTB skills: highly developed trail-bike-body-mind-flow awareness.

As your bike-body awareness improves, your riding will improve in unexpected ways. It doesn't matter what skills you practice, more that you practice regularly and practice well.

Having said that, there are a couple of courses that if completed first will set you up for success, especially if you're a beginner or intermediate rider.

The Flat Pedal Challenge develops a better connection between you and your pedals so is a must-do for new flat pedal riders. And Baseline Balance Skills develops slow speed balance and supercharges your confidence and composure in many common trail situations.

We find people tend to prefer having 2 or 3 courses going simultaneously. Something less physical (e.g. Baseline Balance) and something more challenging (e.g. Bunnyhops or Jumping) is a smart combination. But do be careful to avoid the trap of trying to progress too many skills. Variety is great, but focus is what will bring long term results.

Those who have purchased individual courses can post their question in the comments section of any lesson. To provide a video for coach feedback, simply shoot a video on your smartphone and upload to a video sharing platform (YouTube, Vimeo, Google Drive, Dropbox). Then copy-and-paste a 'share link" into your comment, making sure the link allows access to anyone with that link.

If you have any further questions or are experiencing issues please contact us.

When you post a comment, question or practice video to the RLC website, a real human will respond as quickly as practical. We have coaches and ambassadors in a several timezones globally and response time depends on when someone with appropriate experience is available.

We aim to respond to technique-related questions or video submissions within 24 hours. We prioritise questions where the member is seeking direct feedback so they receive a response before their next practice session. For non-urgent conversational comments, it can take 2 to 3 days.

We are not a 24/7 global call centre, so on occasion we experience short black out periods due to random variables (such as a public holiday in North America coinciding with nighttime in Europe). We'll get back to you when the sun comes up or we finish Thanksgiving dinner.

Feedback for comments posted in the Member Facebook group is more random because responses come from both members and Coaches/Ambassadors. Response time and response quality is more variable than the RLC website. Your post might receive anywhere from one response to 10 or more.

Ryan Leech engages with members as much as possible and loves providing feedback and encouragement to members, in-between developing new and exciting courses.

Ambassadors - Volunteers Sharing Experiences

Ambassadors are MTB skills enthusiasts passionate about helping others. In many cases, the ambassador could be just a few lessons ahead of the member, therefore can relate via sharing recent learning experiences. Ambassadors provide general advice and encouragement.

Coaches - Experts Advising Students

A coach is qualified to provide detailed technique advice. Coaches uses their in-depth knowledge of the RLC curriculum and significant past experience to craft technique advice and corrections that are specific and actionable. Coaches are paid professionals.

Which is Better?
So which is better? Coaches have the advantage of professional training and many years of experience. Whereas ambassadors have the advantage of recent learning experiences. Their perspectives are very different and that's why feedback from both is equally as powerful, but in different ways.
