Meet Your Coach - Peter Glassfod

Peter is a Registered Kinesiologist and Certified Cycling Coach who has been instructing since 2000. His coaching clients are mostly busy, masters-aged athletes who want to optimize their health and performance while balancing family and work. He races XC mountain bikes, but also rides road, cyclocross, downhill and spends time at Joyride 150 indoor bike park between events. He holds the Canadian Leadville 100 record, has completed Ironman Canada and several long distance running races. Peter co-hosts The Consummate Athlete Podcast with his wife, cycling writer Molly Hurford.

Some common Cyclocross specific challenges, answered by coach Peter Glassford

In the course we will break down the steps to a great cyclocross mount. Using several drills, including slow motion mounts, side-hill mounts and lowered saddle mounts you will train out the stutter steps that costs you time and energy on every re-mount.

Since we start with slow speed mounts we get used to approaching the barrier slowly, we also try using flat pedals and really drill the process of swinging the leg around and moving our hand to the top tube. This last step, hand on the top tube BEFORE, you jump off your left pedal can be the trick to eliminating fear of barriers!

The course shows you the techniques that small riders use to get over barriers. The way we grip the top tube can be adjusted for smaller riders, checking for mobility limitations and working on explosivity of the carry and hop over the barriers can be a huge help. The course takes you step-by-step through the foundations of a good mount to make sure you aren’t missing any of the critical aspects of an amazing mount.

We cover the most popular method of grabbing the bike for shouldering it. We drill this off-the-bike so that you get the proper hand position and figure out the process of moving the bike up and down off your shoulder.
